SMARTBOY 32 MB Flash Cart Review

SMARTBOY 32 MB Flash Cart Review

SMARTBOY 32 MB Flash Cart by SMB team

Specifications:

• Cartridge ID: SMARTBOY cart flash cartridge
• Released: 2009
• Manufacturer: (SMB) TEAM
• Rare feature: Smart Boy cartridge writer quite similar of EZ linker models for NINTENDO POWER cartridge GBx. The SMARTBOY cart capacity is 32 Mbits.

Why do I receive at GAMEBOYcarts.com:
My first intention to get one SMARTBOY cart was to use their FLASH WRITER with my GBx unit without positive success :-( . All set comes as you see in these pictures, the SMARTBOY writer hardware is mostly comfortable to carry on and smallest than the USB programmer created by Bleep Bloop, but the functions and software are quite similar. Another important thing was the fact regarding LSDJ… The unit didn’t come with LSDJ pre-installed, so no worries about piss off the Johan works ;-) . It comes with a MANGA style story game inside and that’s all. I installed the software working with WIN XP “Parallels Desktop” (really quick and easy installation by the way,) and my first issue arrive… I erased the original ROM file and set LSDJ v 3.9.9 inside and “SURPRISE”, the LSDJ do not appear inside the cartridge rom + the original ROM file continue alive… at this point i said: “FUCK THIS SHIT”. After some meditations and mantra concentration hehehe,  I sent an email to the SMARTBOY team developers… this is the answer i got:

“Hi,
Please first “ERASE FLASH”, then “write flash” with a GB file.
Please use the computer motherboard itself, built-in USB interface.
If you still have trouble, please contact me again”

I applied the tips and… finally flashed my SMARTBOY cart… yujuuuu!!! ;-) . I tested the cartridge for about 2 hours and works pretty fine and stable for me.

There’s a interesting debate right now regarding LSDJ cartridge solutions out there. For my personal experience the USB Bleep Bloop cart is the best in performance (no USB programmer, transferrer needed), but maybe if you need to carry on more song data per each cartridge you will fine purchasing one EMS 64 MB cartridge or one 32 MB SMARTBOY cart. I didn’t tested other solutions like the 64 MB EMS carts, but if you are a 100% LSDJ user one of these three cartridges I mentioned would be great for you. I will post my review regarding the 64 MB EMS cartridge soon!.

Nice review, although (this is the first time I noticed) english must not be your first language? (or you were drunk when writing this..lol)

Also, FYI, I was just confirming with a friend, and regardless of the song sized in your LSDJ save file, can only be the same size. Meaning that wether you use a bleep bloop, or a 64M, your saves will be the same size. Correct me if im wrong.

Im stoked to be getting one of these this week. I will add to your review that the programmer is also compatible with Gameboy camera dumps. Which is why I never paid extra for the USB cart (since I have a bleep bloop programmers as well)

My white Bleep bloop cart constantly crashes, and my red bleep bloop didn’t hold a save. So hopefully this will perform as good as my EMS cart (but without the lame GBT2)

  2. Drop 1410 says:

Sorry for my English level ;-) . I’ll do my best… hehe.

Make the english revisions and send me back the article hahahaha ;-) . Regarding the cartridge< i tested the GBcamera dump and works perfect for me.

Thanks a lot for your comments.

  3. Kitsch-Bent says:

Can’t wait to post these in the store! And, looking forward to you getting yours Thretris. You are gonna flip out I think.

And, yeah, that’s right about the *.sav file. 128kb, one song or full.

    nice review!

  4. LLTH says:

Hey quick question is the software compatible with windows vista? Nice review as well :)

  5. Drop 1410 says:

Sorry LLTH, I don’t have a copy of WIN VISTA to test… let us know if you try :-) .

    Thanks!

  6. LLTH says:

Alright, I just ordered mine from Kitsch-Bent so i will let you guys know if it works with vista :)

  7. Drop 1410 says:

Hi LLTH, I tested the smartboy with WIN vista using a PC from my firned Jose here in Barcelona and works pretty fine, just keep in mind the instructions regarding the USB connection that I mentioned… use the motherboard USB connection for better results :-) .

    Cheers!

  8. LLTH says:

Awesome thank you Drop 1410, i will make sure to refer to this when i get the cart so i dont get frustrated and fail :)

  9. reiyano says:

    your english is fine =)
    great review btw.

  10. Thretris says:

@reiyano hey, dont make me feel bad..lol.. I just wasnt aware (since I only just noticed, which actually proves the english IS good)

Also, the tiny disc is going to be a problem in my macbook (how can a wii handle them, but apple couldn’t get that right?)

also, I hear these programmers are also compatible with Bleepbloop carts ;)

  11. Drop 1410 says:

Thretris let me know when you get the Smartboy cart, and i will send you a copy of the software ;-) .

    Cheers!

  12. Thretris says:

Oh thanks.. go ahead and send it over, I just emailed you. These programmers as so bad ass. Fits snug in my gameboy pouch along with my DMG and carts.

  13. Vick says:

Can someone upload the software somewhere? My cd appears as blank :_(

    thanks in advance

  14. Vick says:

    whoa thank you!

…now, not to be a complete n00b or something, but… do I need more software? When i plug the programmer and open the software it says

    SMARTBOY CART VERSION 1.15 started.
    Detecting device…
    Device not found!
    Check COM port connection.

I gues I suck at this bussiness

  15. Drop 1410 says:

Vick, just read carefully this article… there’s some tips to follow in order to you detect the cartridge with the SMARTBOY programmer.

    Let me know.

    Thanks

  16. Vick says:

    Ehm … really?
I don’t got a Mac so I don’t use Parallels, and the software doesnt recognize the unit. Am I missing any specific tip? I just want to back up gbcamera sav’s and LSDJ songs, nothing too fancy like flashing or stuff.

Im sorry if im pesado or something

  17. Drop 1410 says:

Hey not a problem to help you… the most important tip is:

Please use the computer motherboard itself, built-in USB interface.

    ;-)

If nothing works after the smartboy tips in this article please contact the SMB team for a replacement.

    Thanks!

  27. dtrack says:

    Hi there,

new to this homebrew/dev GB stuff and i just can’t get it. Whats that red thing with big usb socket on it? I mean thats not the cart, the cart is the other element below the red with lsdj writing on it. its a question:) sorry for being that noobish but if this thing does not need transferer/writer then what is that?
one more question: if i would like to download images from GB camera to my pc(mac) then do i need a transferer/writer? (which is sold or not with this package?)
i have read about a Madcatz Parralel cable, but i ‘d like an usb solution.
    thanks
    great site btw

  28. Spacebar says:

@ Dtrack. I use my SNES with my camera in a Super GameBoy and connect the video out to my pc.
The red thing is the programmer. You need it to flash the cartridge. That thing can be used to load the .sav files from your GBCamera to a pc.

I ordered a smartboy from their site a month ago, i payed but never heard a thing. Not even an oder/payment confirmation. They also don’t reply to my emails… Are there people with the same problem here? Do i need to worry or is it just the way they work so i just have to wait?

  29. dtrack says:

    @Spacebar
Thanks for the info. Is the programmer the part of this package or have to buy separately?

Anyway i am thinking of a solution to build a cable for Arduino, and transfer the images to the Arduino and from Arduino to PC as the Arduino programmed to emulate game boy printer…. this is just a plan, nothing happaned yet :)

Thanks, i lost mine in a pc crash and since i moved i also lost the cd :/

  31. Drop 1410 says:

Uppsss !!! I don’t know why the file is corrupted, I would made another rar and put it on the server.

    Best regards!.

  32. DjoeN says:

Thanks for the quick response :) will redownload when i get home later this evening.

  33. Bob Demling says:

The Nintendo Wii began the revolution of movement based gaming command, but they had been not the initial. The Sony PS3 remotes have had gyroscopes in the remote way prior to the Wii was released, but the finish freedom that Nintendo made with their WiiMote has not been beat since. For Nintendo Wii enthusiasts this new way to command the game system, is not only groundbreaking, but also a really immersive gaming knowledge. There has never been a mainstream gaming technique that has brought the complete relatives into the gaming motion the way that the Nintendo Wii has in the total heritage of console gaming.

Did you manage to get a new rar up of the files?

    discontinued.

does anyone have one to sell?

  37. Natx says:

    Hi,

Smartboy is discontinued. You can get the EMS USB Smart Card:

    http://www.noiseandroid.com/36-ems-usb-gameboy-smart-card-64m-lsdj.html

or comming soon, a new batch of old BleepBloop cards (you’ll need a programmer)

  38. Joe says:

If they ever stop making GB carts, then you can modify your own carts using Flash ROMs. The ICs unfortunately require a bit of skill to replace. I suggest you buy the GB flash carts while you still can! :(

I’m thinking of getting a Gameboy Advance just to run both formats on one system without wearing out my (fragile and old) original DS. There’s a tool that lets you access your GB saves using the link port and a PC. Anyone remember the name? I think it was multiboot based.

Is the reason people prefer the original Gameboy for LSDJ because of the hardware (technical reason) or just plain style? I seem to remember reading something saying they don’t sound exactly the same. In fact, some versions of the Gameboy are different. For example, the GBC. Does anyone use an addon speaker for the headphone jack? Also, what kind of license does LSDJ have?

  39. Joe says:

Oh, I checked the home page and it’s only $2 plus optional tip/donation. So it’s not a big deal if you have to use a nonoriginal LSDJ. It’ll not have the cool sticker, though! ;) That and you will need a cart writer.
