WHAT THE HELL IS PURIKURA?
About a month ago I met whit a guy on the FLICKR network called “Vicky vs”… he told me about these games called “PURIKURA”, I was impressed about the game concept and of course I started my personal investigation to find these two versions (boxed) and also in mint conditions. Thank you very much Vicky to reffer these games to me. Here’s the original Vicky vs message:

Vicky vs said: Purikura are photocabinets in Japan wich hold a kind of photoshop-integrated software to add patches, brushes and whatnot to pictures. Theyre pretty popular. Theres a series of videogames of a girl hunting purikura pictures. The first one features a white cartridge and its pretty rare.

From Wikipedia: In Japanese popular culture, Purikura (プリクラ, Purikura) refers to a photo sticker booth or the product of such a photo booth. The name is a shortened form of the a registered trademark purinto kurabu (プリント倶楽部, Purinto Kurabu?). The term derives from the English print club. Jointly developed by Atlus and Sega, the first purikura were sold in July 1995.

This is a quick tutorial to show you how to fit the USB PCB board from the GAMEBOY color cartridge to one of the vintage and original DMG carts.

Before to do this with your yellow, white, red, blue or any other gamboy cart you will find on internet, just do some training trying with a regular grey DMG carts. So you will get more experience about how to do this and not damage your preferred cartridge. You could do this mod buying the POKEMON special editions carts, or a white cart like this, just try to find the original TAMAGOTCHI JAPAN game, as I know is the only game that was come inside a white DMG game cartridge.

Maybe a week ago you saw an incredible and cool bending mode for your DMG in You tube… The mod it’s called > GAME BOY pitch MOD/Modification… but like me, Ralp and also our friend Lautaro the only WORST thing that we didn’t like it was that hole you’ll must do over the plastic case of your GAME BOY to locate the pitch Knob, my reaction was… (man I don’t want my GAMEBOY look’s like a homeless)… yuuuk!!, so we decide to support Ralp in order to create this MOD inspired by the all information that you could find on GET LO-FI website and also regarding the aspect that you could attach the PITCH Hardware to you preferred GAME BOY when you needed must. We also keep in mind a good way to conect the wire into the GAME BOY, clean, and secure. In this post you will find a picture with the final results and a nice scheme made by Ralp for this tutorial.

You can also follow the 8bit collective post HERE

Enjoy this MOD, until now the modification works perfect! and you will not make a CRAP hole into your GAME BOY anymore .

Why do I receive at GAMEBOYcarts.com:

First time I saw this cart was in the GAME BOY DEV weblog by José Torres. Was a SHOCK for me, like “What the hell is that…” after some HARD research on EBAY, JAPAN auction sites and I think the entire net I finally got one of this beauties. This cart is really hard to find here in Europe and America, but one of my friends in Japan sent me this piece of art .

Technical review (source WIKIPEDIA):

The Nintendo Power flash RAM cartridge was a Japan-only peripheral produced by Nintendo for the Super Famicom and the Game Boy, which allowed owners to download Super Famicom/Game Boy games onto a special flash memory cartridge for cheaper than the full cartridge would have been. During the days of the Famicom, Nintendo developed the Famicom Disk System, a disk drive with expanded RAM which allowed Famicom owners to use rewritable disks. The system was relatively popular, but suffered from issues of piracy and limited capacity. However, Nintendo did see the market for a rewritable game device thanks to the popularity of the FDS. The NP cartridges solve the piracy issue by the fact that they are solid-state, as opposed to being a rewritable medium like the FDS, making their use in duplication limited. The limited capacity issue was solved by maximizing the size of the flash memory in the cartridge to 4 megabytes, the largest amount used by the vast majority of Super Famicom games. Each cartridge’s flash RAM is divided internally into eight blocks. Unless an 8-block game is loaded onto the cartridge, however, one block is reserved for the game selection menu, leaving only seven blocks for games. In addition, each cartridge has a small amount of SRAM for game saves, which is divided into sixteen blocks. Games are rounded up in capacity (i.e. a 10 megabit Super Famicom game needs three flash RAM blocks (12 megabits), a Game Boy game that needs 100 kilobits of save space would need 2 SRAM blocks (128 kilobits).) The system does have one limitation – games that utilize a special chip (such as the Super FX) cannot be placed on the NP cartridge, as the needed chip was not in the cartridge.

A user would first purchase the RAM cartridge itself, then bring it to a store which had an NP copier. The player would select games to be placed on the cartridge, and then had them loaded on. In addition, the store would provide the purchaser with a printed copy of the manual for the game. Game prices varied, with older titles being relatively cheap, and newer titles and NP exclusives being more expensive.

A similar system of distribution was later used by Nintendo for the iQue Player in China.

Here my review!

Specifications:
• Cartridge ID: DMG-ATAJ-JPN
• Released: 1996-1997
• Manufacturer: BANDAI
• Rare feature: White cartridge color shape.

Why do I receive at GAMEBOYcarts.com:
I think one of the most important and desired GAME BOY console inside the chiptune scene and also for many collectors around the world is the WHITE DMG model. I have three of those on my current set (yeah! lucky guy) and one of my dreams was to find a special and strange white cartridge to combine one of console with a white cartridge.

Never would have believed that one of the most important manufacturers of video games in Japan called BANDAI would bring to us a white game boy game cartridge. Thanks my friend RALP I got my first white cartridge on Ebay… WOW, a white GAME BOY cartridge, many people love the Pokemon versions in yellow, gold, blue, & red, but a white cart in my personal feeling is just AWESOME. The bad thing was, I don’t know how to play a Japanese game heheheh, so I decided to open the cart, removed the original game board and set one of my USB LSDJ PCB board (by Jose Torres) inside. You could find a picture inside this article and confirm the metamorphosis .

If you are a chiptune or GAME BOY music artist and also want to know how to fit a USB LSDJ cartridge board inside one of these beauties just visit my USB cartridge vintage mod tutorial here. I do it this mode to all of my LSDJ or Nanoloop carts because the white color was a favorite of my father who died in 2008.

Where you can get one?
Ebay always safe my ass when I want to find these kind of things, but I want to be honest… this cartridge is really hard to find. If you will visit Japan or if you have a friend in Japan you will find lot of this carts in any collectors shops like SUPER POTATO or PLAY-ASIA.com.
